"Hope and change are more possible than fear," says women's rights activist Shannon Galpin.
NamedNational Geographic'sAdventurer of the Year in 2014, Galpin has taken the world by storm founding the nonprofitMountain2Mountain, the activist organizationCombat Apathyand the Afghan cycling programStrength in Numbers.
On this episode of theSpartan UP!podcast series, Entrepreneur Network partner Joseph De Sena meets with Galpin to discuss her mission to fight for women's rights globally and specifically through cycling.
As a victim of gender abuse herself, Galpin made the overnight decision that the world needs to change and that she has to be a part of that change. A sports trainer and cyclist turned humanitarian, Galpin wanted to get to the bottom of what permits widespread oppression against women -- especially those in Afghanistan.
To figure out how to help, Galpin traveled to Afghanistan. She founded Afghanistan's first national cycling team, which today has six to eight competitive women cyclists and more than 100 who are riding. Despite threats and opposition, Afghan women are empowered through riding.
