7-Eleven Inc.

There were 59,5727-Elevenfranchises in the world through 2016, up from 33,298 in 2007.

It sounds like a lot, but it's even more when you consider this: The other top five franchises only have 56,449 storescombined. And those franchises aren't exactly niche operations -- they include McDonald's and Dunkin' Donuts.

McDonald's

Entrepreneur Franchise 500 Rank:2

Initial investment:$1,003,000 to $2,228,000

Initial franchise fee:$45,000

New units in 2016:-21 units (-0.1 percent)

Doesn't it always feel as if a newMcDonald'sis popping up in your town? But, you never see one close, and the company just keeps growing and growing. Although there were slightly fewer franchises in 2016 than in 2015, McDonald's has still added 1,611 franchises over the past three years.

Dunkin' Donuts

Entrepreneur Franchise 500 Rank:3

Initial investment:$228,621 to $1,692,314

Initial franchise fee:$40,000 to $90,000

New units in 2016:373 units (3.2 percent)

A lot of America might run on the donut and coffee spot, but there is still a chunk of the south and midwest where there isn't aDunkin' Donutson every corner. So, if you live in a state like Alabama, Michigan or Texas (or even if you don't), it might be worth checking out the company'slist of available territories.

The UPS Store

Entrepreneur Franchise 500 Rank:4

Initial investment:$159,224 to $434,521

Initial franchise fee:$29,950

New units in 2016:48 units (1.0 percent)

I could talk a lot about buying aUPS Storefranchise -- the company' growth or how veterans can save $10,000 on franchise fees, are just a few tidbits -- but, we've actually published an interview with a franchisee on the site. So, I'm going to let Baltimore franchisee Alex Chambersexplain what it's like to run a UPS Store.

Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches

Entrepreneur Franchise 500 Rank:5

Initial investment:$325,500 to $555,000

Initial franchise fee:$35,000

New units in 2016:350 units (15.3 percent)

Jimmy John'sis a staple of the Entrepreneur's Franchise 500 -- itfinished number onein our 2016 version -- and it's not hard to see why. In 2007, there were 579 Jimmy John's franchises. In 2016, there were 2,636. That's a 355 percent growth in 10 years.

Dairy Queen

Entrepreneur Franchise 500 Rank:6

Initial investment:$361,450 to $1,835,825

Initial franchise fee:$35,000

New units in 2016:480 units (7.7 percent)

Sherb Noble opened the firstDairy Queenin Joliet, Ill., in 1940, and the company started franchising in 1943. So, it only makes sense that Dairy Queen doesn't have the explosive sort of growth that a newer company like Jimmy John's has. However, the burger and ice cream joint has continued to grow, adding 1,082 franchises from 2007 to 2016.

Entrepreneur Franchise 500 Rank:7

Initial investment:$272,500 to $1,561,500

Initial franchise fee:$5,000

New units in 2016:91 units (1.9 percent)

Ace Hardwarehas been around for almost a century, having been founded in 1924. By 2016, there were 5,102 franchises -- 635 more than there were in 2007. A lot of that growth has come from international franchises, and Ace's website states it hasa location in 60 countriesnow.

Wingstop Restaurants Inc.

Entrepreneur Franchise 500 Rank:8

Initial investment:$303,176 to $922,930

Initial franchise fee:$20,000

New units in 2016:164 units (20.9 percent)

Wingstophad 308 franchises in 2007 and 949 in 2016. That's some pretty stark growth. One potential reason for that is the relatively quick training and decreased need for a big staff. McDonald's has onsite training for its franchisees for six to 24 months -- Wingstop's is only 10 days.

Sport Clips

Entrepreneur Franchise 500 Rank:9

Initial investment:189300美元到354500美元

Initial franchise fee:$25,000 to $59,500

New units in 2016:155 units (11.0 percent)

No business comes without risk, butSportClipsboasts a99.4 percent franchise continuity rate, meaning that over the past five years, only six of the company's more than 1,500 franchises have closed. That sustainability has been key to the growth of SportClips, which isstill looking for franchises in 19 states.

Initial investment:$37,500 to $224,000

Initial franchise fee:$15,000 to $37,500

Though it can still cost six figures,Re/Max(short for Real Estate Maximums) is, on average, the least expensive and most accessible franchise of the top 10. That's one reason why there were 7,217 franchises in 2016, and it might be why there were nearly as many international locations (3,585) as American franchises (3,632).
