Enthusiasm for entrepreneurship and the steep cost of living in Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay area generally is stengtheningstartup communitiesin unexpected places. These startup hubs are popping up throughout the country in large cities like Austin, Denver and Los Angeles, as one might expect, but some of the most innovative groups across different industries are carving out names for themselves in smaller cities and counties.

The tech meetup in Santa Cruz, Calif., has members focused on buildingnext-generation transportation technologies, theSanta Cruz Sentinelwrites. Santa Cruz native JoeBen Bevirt, head of Joby Aviation, is developing an impressive and potentially change-making vertical take-off and landing aircraft.

What's most exciting about Orange County is that startup incubators and workspaces likeEureka BuildingandUCI Applied Innovationare serving as home for large entrepreneurial communities. One such community isOC Tech Happy Hour(OCTHH). From humble beginnings as a small meetup where techies (engineers, developers, designers), entrepreneurs and investors alike would gather at local bars and restaurants to hang out and talk about their latest projects.

Founded in July of 2014, OC Tech Happy Hour has quickly become the largest and most active tech meetup group with more than 5,000 members, and a regular series of large-scale events that attract 300 people each time.

The group has different topics every month ranging from their popularVirtual Reality eventstoRock Star Mixersat the Island Hotel in Newport Beach. "We're not just creating more throwaway app ideas, we're creating sustainable businesses backed by the multi-billion dollar corporations surrounding us," said Lee Decker, founder of OCTHH. "Our goal is to unify Southern California as the place to be to grow a company."

The group is supported by important ecosystem resources like IBM for cloud computing resources,Orange County Code Schoolwhich provides software development training and currently has a 100 percent graduate hiring rate, as well as the very important app development companyOC Web Kingswhich works with startups and larger companies alike to make their sites and apps affordable.

Local business support is critical to the success of these inventive tech communities. "The group wouldn't exist without local support from businesses that are making a serious impact in the community," said Decker. And it's true for each of these emerging, regional tech communities. Local fuels national, and it's true for innovation.
